Selena Gomez has reportedly seen a significant drop in her Instagram followers, losing over 700,000 in just one month after posting an emotional video reacting to recent executive orders signed by President Donald Trump.
The 32-year-old singer, known for her activism and strong social media presence, became visibly upset after Trump introduced a series of controversial executive orders. The new measures, which include stricter immigration rules and renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, have caused widespread concern and criticism across the nation.

In the video, posted last month, Gomez is seen crying as she expresses fear for millions of people potentially affected by the new immigration policies. “I’m so sorry. All my people are getting attacked. The children, I don’t understand. I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise,” she said, clearly emotional.
However, after receiving backlash, Gomez deleted the video and later shared another post, stating: “Apparently it’s not okay to show empathy for people.”
Despite her attempt to address the issue, Selena’s social media following has suffered a blow. According to data from CritiqueJeu, a digital analytics platform, Gomez has lost 808,500 Instagram followers in the past 30 days alone. Paul Lenglet, co-founder of CritiqueJeu, commented on the dramatic decline: “Selena Gomez ended 2024 on a high note, but 2025 has been much harder for her.”
The drop in followers is not only attributed to her political stance but also to her involvement in the film Emilia Pérez, which received criticism for its portrayal of a story set in Mexico, despite being produced in Paris.

Gomez’s video expressing solidarity with immigrants came just as President Trump signed an executive order that could potentially lead to the deportation of millions of people living in the U.S. illegally. Former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) director Tom Homan, now serving as the ‘border czar’ in Trump’s administration, has emphasized that the new executive orders will enforce stricter immigration policies, including a large-scale deportation program.
Trump’s administration has outlined plans to begin deportations quickly, targeting migrants with criminal records first, followed by others living in the U.S. unlawfully. The controversial “collateral arrests” policy also allows authorities to arrest individuals who may not have committed any crimes but are near those who have, adding further fuel to the immigration debate.
While the debate continues to unfold, Selena Gomez’s outspoken reaction has sparked a wave of mixed responses from her fans and critics alike, ultimately affecting her popularity on social media. Many continue to question how celebrity activism might impact their public image, while others argue that empathy and standing up for marginalized communities should always be encouraged.
