A man was arrested in Malibu, California, on January 12 for impersonating a firefighter to steal from evacuated homes amidst the raging Palisades wildfire. Robert Luna, Los Angeles County Sheriff, confirmed the arrest, noting that the suspect was dressed in firefighting gear while breaking into homes in an evacuation zone.
According to Jim McDonnell, a Los Angeles Police Department officer, the man was part of a group of three individuals driving around the Pacific Palisades area despite a strict curfew in place. Authorities had repeatedly warned that anyone found in evacuation zones from 6 PM to 6 AM without official permission would be arrested.
McDonnell emphasized that the man could face up to one year in prison for his actions, stating, “There are people who will go to any lengths to profit from a disaster.” Luna also confirmed that a total of 29 arrests have been made in connection with the ongoing wildfire crisis in Los Angeles. These arrests include violations of curfew, weapons possession, and drug-related offenses.
Firefighters continue to battle wildfires in the Mandeville Canyon area of Los Angeles County, with the flames having spread rapidly since January 7. The fires have resulted in at least 16 fatalities, with many more missing or injured. Over 100,000 residents have been forced to evacuate, and more than 12,000 buildings have been destroyed.
Local authorities are urging the public to stay clear of evacuation zones. McDonnell stressed that the curfew is a critical safety measure to protect affected areas and secure property for evacuees.
