A 67-year-old father has lost his life in the recent LA wildfires after choosing to stay behind to care for his son, who has cerebral palsy.
Anthony Mitchell, a retired salesman from Altadena, California, made the heart-wrenching decision to remain at their home to wait for his son, Justin, who is in his early 20s and bedridden. Despite the danger of the fires, Mitchell refused to leave his son, ensuring he would be safe before evacuating. Unfortunately, Mitchell did not survive the blaze. He was one of at least ten confirmed casualties of the wildfires, with five of those deaths attributed to the Eaton fire.
Mitchell’s daughter, Hajime White, shared the devastating news and expressed the profound loss her family is feeling. “It’s like a ton of bricks just fell on me,” White told CBS. She also revealed that her father leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mitchell was known for his playful spirit, giving his loved ones affectionate nicknames like “Strawberry Shortcake” and “Marshmallow.”
The fires, which have scorched over 10,000 homes, have caused widespread destruction in LA and surrounding areas. Whole neighborhoods have been reduced to ash, and the damage continues to grow as strong winds feed the flames. Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley warned that the danger is far from over. “We are not out of danger. Active fires are still burning, and strong winds will continue through the night,” she said, urging the public to cooperate with firefighters and first responders.
In addition to the tragic loss of life, the fires have claimed the homes of several prominent figures, including businesswoman and socialite Paris Hilton. Hilton shared her grief on Instagram after seeing her Malibu home reduced to ruins, writing that her heart felt shattered. “This house wasn’t just a place to live—it was where we dreamed, laughed, and created the most beautiful memories as a family,” Hilton said. “To see it reduced to ashes… it’s devastating beyond words.”
