Elon Musk’s Father Talks About Family’s Connection to Liverpool and Son’s Interest in Buying the Club

Errol Musk, father of billionaire Elon Musk, has revealed why the family feels such a strong connection to Liverpool and suggested that his son would “love” to purchase the Premier League club. The statement has reignited speculation about Elon Musk’s potential involvement in English football.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media platform X, has previously been linked with buying an English football club. However, it’s his father who has now provided a glimpse into Musk’s interest in Liverpool FC, which has made headlines.

In a conversation with Kait Borsay on Times Radio, Errol Musk was asked whether his son had shown interest in purchasing Liverpool. While he couldn’t provide any concrete information, he did hint at Elon’s enthusiasm.

“Does your son want to buy Liverpool Football Club?” Borsay asked.

“I can’t comment on that, they’ll raise the price. I can’t comment on that,” Errol responded with a laugh. However, Borsay, a Liverpool fan herself, pressed him further, asking, “Has he expressed a desire to buy Liverpool Football Club?”

“Oh yes, oh yes – but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it, you know,” Errol Musk replied. “He would like to, yes. Obviously. Anyone would want to. So would I.”

Elon Musk’s net worth is estimated to be $439 billion (£350 billion), according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, making him one of the wealthiest individuals globally. In comparison, Liverpool’s current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are valued at around $13 billion (£10.4 billion). This makes Musk roughly 32 times wealthier than FSG, suggesting he could easily afford a potential purchase of the club.

Liverpool is currently ranked as the fourth most valuable football club globally, with an estimated worth of $5.7 billion (£4.3 billion), which is just over 1% of Musk’s total fortune. Despite the rumors, there has been no indication that FSG is open to selling the club, with FSG owner John W Henry reaffirming their commitment to Liverpool last summer.

The topic of Elon Musk potentially buying Liverpool sparked a lively debate on talkSPORT, where former footballers Alan Brazil and Ally McCoist discussed the possibility. McCoist, however, jokingly suggested he would welcome Musk at Rangers instead, while Brazil acknowledged that recent football ownership stories, like those at Wrexham and Birmingham, have shown anything is possible.

McCoist added that if Musk were to buy Liverpool, it could help resolve the ongoing contract situations of key players like Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk, all of whom have contracts expiring in 2025. A takeover by one of the world’s richest individuals could potentially solve these issues by ensuring the players receive lucrative new deals.

Errol Musk also spoke about the family’s deep ties to Liverpool, explaining that his mother, Elon’s grandmother, was born in the city, and they have relatives there. The Musk family has had a long connection with Liverpool, even knowing some of The Beatles, who grew up near them.

Elon Musk’s potential interest in owning a Premier League club isn’t a new topic. Back in 2022, he caused a stir among Manchester United fans when he tweeted about buying the club. Although he clarified that it was a joke, he did admit that if he were to purchase a football team, it would be United, as they were his favorite team growing up.

So, would a Manchester United fan like Elon Musk really commit the ultimate sin and purchase Liverpool? The future remains uncertain, but the connection to the club through his family’s roots in the city, combined with his past interest in owning a football team, suggests that anything is possible. For now, fans of Liverpool and other top clubs will have to wait and see whether Elon Musk decides to make his move into football ownership.
