Man Cleared of Manslaughter but Found Guilty of Assault in Death of Girlfriend

Ryan Wellings, 30, has been found guilty of assault and controlling and coercive behavior after the tragic death of his girlfriend, Kiena Dawes, 23, who died by suicide in July 2022. Despite being accused of driving Dawes to her death following years of alleged domestic abuse, Wellings was cleared of manslaughter charges.

The case attracted significant attention as it marked the first time someone had been tried for manslaughter following the suicide of a partner in a domestic violence situation. Dawes’ death was preceded by a heartbreaking note she left behind, which included claims that she had been “murdered” and that Wellings had “killed” her. She also left their nine-month-old daughter with a friend before taking her own life.

The court heard how Wellings and Dawes’ relationship had initially begun with passionate romance but soon turned into a nightmare. Text messages between the couple and messages from Dawes to friends were presented as evidence of Wellings’ abusive behavior. The prosecution argued that Wellings was a controlling and aggressive figure in Dawes’ life, with allegations of physical violence and disturbing threats, including threats to disfigure her with acid.

In contrast, the defense presented Dawes’ mental health history, including a diagnosis of unstable personality disorder, suggesting that her death resulted from a combination of factors, not solely the abuse she suffered. Wellings admitted to being “heavy handed” with Dawes but denied intentional harm, explaining that any violence was a result of his attempts to restrain her or accidental actions.

Despite the defense’s arguments, the jury found Wellings guilty of assault and controlling and coercive behavior, although they cleared him of manslaughter. His sentencing is yet to take place, and the case has raised important discussions about the impact of domestic violence on mental health and the tragic outcomes that can follow.

The case also brought to light concerns over the response of the authorities. It was revealed that Dawes had made a statement to the police about a beating she suffered, which had required hospital treatment. However, Wellings had been allowed to remain free, breaking his bail conditions but not facing imprisonment. This has led to disciplinary hearings for three Lancashire Police officers involved in the case.

The tragedy of Kiena Dawes’ death highlights the complex and devastating effects of domestic abuse and mental health struggles. While Wellings has been held accountable for his actions to some extent, the case underscores the need for continued attention to both the prevention of domestic violence and the support of individuals facing mental health challenges.
